I have been
extra busy at work lately, which is in addition to all the normal craziness I manage to pack in each week. Needless to say, I have not had much time or energy to cook lately, but I still try to have dinner on the table each night, even if it only takes me ten
minutes to make. That’s where these meatball subs are perfect. I had some Udi’s hotdog buns in my freezer and a bag of Meijer Homestyle pre-made frozen meatballs and
figured I could make a quick meatball sub that still tasted amazing. These subs
took very little time to prepare and even less effort, yet they were very delicious.
Easy Baked Meatball
Subs
You will
need:
20 Frozen or
homemade Meatballs (4 medium meatballs will fit into 1 Udi’s bun)
3/4 (18 oz) Jar Prego Pasta Sauce
1 cup Shredded Mozzarella Cheese
Preheat oven
to 400F. Grease a 9x9 inch baking dish.
1) Place
frozen meatballs (no need to thaw) and pasta sauce in a sauce pan. Coat the
meatballs by turning them carefully with a spoon. Cook over medium heat until
heated through.
2) Place buns
open side up in the greased baking dish. Be careful to keep the buns intact if
possible. Put 4 cooked meatballs in each bun and top with remaining sauce if desired.
Cover each sub with shredded mozzarella cheese; I probably used more than a cup
since I love lots of cheese.
3) Bake subs
in preheated oven until cheese is melted and slightly browning.
Enjoy!
Enjoy!
When I looked up the brand of meatballs you mentioned to see if I could find them to buy, I found an ingredients list for the meatballs. In the list, it said they contain wheat flour so the meatballs are not GF.
ReplyDeleteHello! Thank you for your concern. I used Meijer Fully Cooked Microwaveable Homestyle Meatballs and had no reaction at all (I am very sensitive). The only thing these contain is soy, and there is no wheat or wheat-byproducts listed. I can get you the full ingredients list of the meatballs I used if you would like.
DeleteAll of these recipes have been SO helpful!!! Thabk you SO much
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback - I am very happy to hear that! You are welcome :)
DeleteDid you thaw the buns or put them in frozen? I haven't used Udi's yet because the idea of pulling bread from the freezer is so foreign to me.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a medical need to go gluten free, but want to make gradual lifestyle changes for a healthier me :) I'd love to try this recipe and look forward to your response.
Hi Sarah, thanks for the comment! I guess I forgot to mention that in my post. I microwaved the buns just so that they were pliable and easy to open. You could thaw them overnight in the fridge or use them fresh, I'm sure that would work just as well too. Let me know if you have any other questions!
DeleteThese were delicious! My whole family truly enjoyed them! My hubby found Jennie-O turkey meatballs that according to their website are gluten free. I know many people were asking about which to use. We could not tell they were turkey meatballs, they tasted awesome!
ReplyDeleteThere has been some question on what kind of meatballs, and I know the ones i used are not always available at Meijer either. That's good to know, I'll have to look for the turkey meatballs next time I make this!
DeleteHello, our four year old daughter is newly diagnosed with Celiac Disease and we are in the process of figuring out just what recipes we can start making for her. One of her favorite pre-diagnosis dinners was spaghetti. We've found a Gluten free pasta that she likes but we've always used Ragu sauce in the past. Unfortunately we can't find any indication that it is Gluten Free.
ReplyDeleteYou used Prego sauce in the recipe above. It hasn't proven to be any trouble, has it?
Thanks for what you are doing. It's really helpful to two new parents of a child with Celiac disease.
Hi Nat! Welcome to my blog, I'm sure you'll find many of these recipes helpful as you're just starting out.
DeleteI'm glad you asked, it's better safe than sorry when it comes to knowing if a product is GF or not. I usually always use Prego Fresh Mushroom sauce which is gluten free. Don't forget to always read the label, even on products you have trusted before. You can find a list of other Campbell's GF products here: http://www.campbellsoupcompany.com/pdf/faq_glutenfreeproductlist.pdf
